For the past twenty years I've been working in university career centers – small private
colleges and a mid-sized state university. They all have one thing in common: incredible
free resources and simply not enough time to give every student the personalized
attention they need.
Here's the truth I learned from the inside: career centers are amazing at providing tools
and general guidance. What they don't have bandwidth for is personalized coaching
through every step of your unique journey. That's the gap I fill.
But first, maximize what your university career center offers for free!
- Explore your career center's webpage. The technology tools these centers
purchase are often cutting edge – self-assessments, AI-powered career matching, and
occupational research databases that can open doors to careers you've never
considered. - Register on your university's job board. Handshake, Symplicity, or similar
platforms connect you directly with employers who specifically want to hire students
from YOUR school. - Show up in person! Visit the actual office for workshops, employer sessions, on-
campus interviews, and career fairs that might not be fully promoted online. Book an
advisor appointment for insider knowledge about local employers. - Follow the social media. LinkedIn and Instagram accounts for your university, clubs,
career center, and alumni association are goldmines for networking opportunities and
employer visits. - Network while you're on campus. Meet with faculty during office hours, attend club
meetings, collect business cards at employer events. Then add everyone to LinkedIn.
This is the easiest networking you'll ever do!
Here's Where Most Students Get Stuck
You've done everything right – used the resources, attended workshops, applied to jobs.
But you're still not getting responses. Or you're getting interviews but no offers. Or
you're completely overwhelmed about which direction to take.
This is exactly where career centers hit their limit. They simply cannot provide the hours
of one-on-one attention it takes to craft a resume that beats ATS systems, optimize your
LinkedIn so recruiters find YOU, practice interviews until you sound confident and
natural, or navigate salary negotiations.
This Is Where I Come In
What career centers don't have time for is what I do every day. Personalized, intensive
coaching from discovering what you actually want to crafting materials that showcase
your unique value to practicing until you can ace any interview.
I've spent two decades inside career centers. I know exactly where students fall through
the cracks, and I built my practice specifically to fill that gap.
Think of it this way: you wouldn't take the SAT without prep. Why approach launching
your career without the same support?
Your university career center gives you the foundation. I give you the personalized
strategy, accountability, and coaching to actually land the job.
