Why timing matters.
Most employers recruit months before graduation. Students who wait until after commencement to start their search often walk into a more competitive, more crowded market.
According to NACE's First Destinations for the College Class of 2024, roughly 86% of bachelor's degree graduates were employed or continuing their education within six months of graduation, which means thousands were still searching well past commencement.
That delay has a real cost, and not just financially in the short term. Research from economist Lisa Kahn found that for every one percentage point increase in the unemployment rate at graduation, starting wages drop 6 to 7 percent, a gap still measurable 15 years later.
The math is sobering on its own. For a graduate on track to earn $60,000 a year, three months without a job means roughly $15,000 in lost income, six months means roughly $30,000, and a full year means the entire $60,000 salary never materializes. That's before counting missed raises, delayed retirement contributions, or the experience a student didn't get to build.
